Deciember 9
The flight
I am nervous about arriving at the airport so late at night - 11:30 pm. The Lonely Planet wans you about taking the wrong type of taxi from the airport as it can be quite dangerous. Luckily I am seated next to a nice young couple from San Diego -- Marcos and Crissy. They live in a cool part of San Diego - Pacific Beach (Rodney, my ex-financee lived there for a while but that´s a whole other story). Marcos is originally from Lima and Crissy from Boston. He´s tall, with broad shoulders, tanned and quite attractive. She is quite pretty with medium length brown hair.
Making new friends already
Crissy and Marcos both work in high tech and I think it is providence that we are seated together. She works for intuit as a tech wirter and Marcos does software engineering contracts for the game industry, most recently working for Sony. He sleeps for most of the 6 hour flight and Crissy and I talk most of the way. The flight attendants asks if we are sisters -- funny I didn´t think we really look alike -- though perhaps there is some resemblance.
They are going to the same part of Lima as myself, Miraflores. I ask to share a taxi and they kindly agree.
Continental Sucks
We arrive and the airport is under construction and pretty chaotic -- kind of what I expected for a developing country. Crissy and Marcos collect their baggage and my backpack is no where to be found. I find out from the lost luggage counter at Continental that the plane was overweight so they removed some of the bags in Houston.
Dios Mio¡ Why was mine chosen? Because of the big Canadian flag sewn to it? Because I am a backpacker? The luck of the draw? I fill out a report and am told it will arrive on the same flight the following evening and that they will deliver it to my hostel, the Flying Dog.
I am exhausted by the time I arrive at the hostel and am given a dorm with three other people already in it. Unfortunately it is not segregated and there´s a guy in the room snoring. Lovely. For some things i.e. clocks tickin, snoring, etc... I am a light sleeper. Funny living in Gastown that I can sleep through police sirens, dumpster divers, gunshots -- but not snoring.
